The average human being in any line of work could double his productivity capacity overnight if he began right now to do all the things he knows he should do, and to stop doing all the things he knows he should not do. That’s one of the best advices I have known on work. And the statement comes from the pen of Charles E. Hughes. More often that, people try to mind other people’s job that they have neglected what they ought to do in the first place.
Here are ten steps on how to become successful in the work you are doing.
- 1.Don’t get the idea that you are like Atlas, carrying the world on your shoulder. The world would go on even without you. Don’t take yourself so seriously.
- 2.Tell yourself you like your work. Then it will become a pleasure, not drudgery. Perhaps you do not need to change your job.
- 3.Plan your work and then work your plan. Lack of system produces that “I’m swamped” feeling.
- 4.Don’t try to do everything at once. That is why time is spread out. Operate on that wise advise from the Bible, “This one thing I do”.
- 5.Get a correct mental attitude. Think a job is hard, and you will make it hard. Think it easy, and it will tend to become so.
- 6.Become an expert in your work. It is always easier to do a thing right. “A man who is too big to study his job,” said William E. North, “is as big as he will ever be.
- 7.Practice being relaxed. Easy always does it. Don’t press or strain.
- 8.Do not put off until tomorrow what you can do today. It only makes tomorrow’s job harder. It piles up on you. Keep your work on schedule.
- 9.At the start of everyday, pray about your work. You will get some of your best ideas that way.
- 10.Take a long your “unseen Partner.” It is surprising the load He will take off you. God is as much as at home, in offices, in schools and shops as in churches. He knows more about your work than you do.
