Democratic education is a theory oflearning and school governance in which pupils and staff participate freely and equally in a school democracy. In a democratic school, there is typically shared decision making among pupils and staff on matters concerning living, working and learning together.

A democratic teacher gives his pupils to undertake a cooperative learning approach to study. This means that, pupils take on decision making about some content and method. He can be flexible enough to avoid being stifled by an externally imposed assessment.

He encourages realization that pupils are valued as people and that they have a positive role to play in creating a caring community within the school. Relationships between pupils and teachers gradually improve as they work democratically together to create a positive environment.
