If you ask children in the primary level of what they wanted to be when they grow up, 90 percent of the pupils either girl or boy would answer “I want to become a teacher.” If this is the case then, “Good job Teacher!” Your students are having fun in your class. They see you as a role model.
Teaching in the primary level has greater impact on children. The lessons may be easier compared to the intermediate level. But the love and compassion that you give your children is incomparable. Classes in the primary level are often self-contained. Teachers need to be with their pupils all the time including recess, since these children need close supervision. It give teacher the opportunity to get to know their pupils better.
Patience is the best armour in teaching these youngsters. In terms of the subject matter, teachers should make sure to follow the step by step procedure. Follow the steps R.E.A.D. make sure that the child is READY for the new lesson. Give them the EASY questions first. The child is always eager to learn and answer questions if he knows he can do it. If the child got the concept of the lesson challenge them with the AVERAGE questions. Apply the DIFFICULT questions with real life situations. Children will value the lesson more if they realize that it can be used in their daily living. Remember they are just kids, they are not yet experts.
These little fellows love to draw. They can even make stories in their drawings. If you look closely at their work it will give you hint on why they act such, especially on those quiet and timid children. On the other hand, if you give illustrations or drawings that need to be copied, always keep in mind that it should be simple. Simple so the kids will not get frustrated. Sometimes teachers tend to show off on how good they are in drawing.
Do not answer the question with a question. If the child asks you even with a simple question, common sense question, give them a direct answer. Hints and questions will not help them find the answer they are looking for. What you give is what they get.
Teaching in the primary is very challenging. But these children in the primary level are sweetest, honest, and sincere pupils. Thank God I am a teacher.
