One of the core courses a Filipino student must know is mathematics. This requires developing critical thinking skills through problem solving and being rational in comprehending the various steps required to arrive at a solution in mathematical difficulties. The bigger problem is getting Filipinos to change their idle ways and become adaptable and logical. And to really foster critical thinking abilities, that entails administering appropriate and adequate drills and examinations.
Years of experience teaching mathematics have taught me that each student has a unique learning style and that various learning opportunities can either support or impede a student’s cognitive growth.
The delight I witness when my pupils eventually grasp challenging mathematics classes is one of the many positive experiences I have when teaching the subject. It is a privilege to witness and know that my students have finally attained the learning objectives that the educational institution has designed for them after many struggles and groans of disgust. The fact that I can see the changes that take place in my kids, no matter how slowly, is also a blessing. It is such a relief that all of our efforts have paid off, that my students have benefited from endless drills, and that they have internalized the value of perseverance.
On the other hand, there have also been challenging times in my career as a math instructor. There have been occasions when I have given up on repeatedly teaching and illustrating mathematical ideas, equations, and formulas. My days and nights of planning would seem to come to naught, at least to me. The majority of the time, when I see their expressionless faces during our class talks, I pause for a moment and wonder if the teaching-learning process is actually taking place.
It’s true that these highs and lows have shaped who I am as a teacher. I frequently wonder if mathematics is something I should pursue, and fortunately, my students’ perspectives always reveal the answer.
