Now that you are a grown adult and has learned that your career would depend on an unpredictable economy, don’t you wish that you could have made use of some guidance on what to take up during college? Someone who could tell you that a part of your success would depend on money situations? Someone should have advised you to tread a profession that is recession-proof.
So I was thinking, as young as my students are, guiding them on what careers to choose would be a great gift I could give them besides the things I am already teaching them. This is the reality to life and what better thing to offer students but what really happens in the world and how they would manage and cope with it.
In a survey made by students in the Career Center Senior Exit Survey at the Duke University in April 2010, education, healthcare, and engineering/technology always comes out in the answers.
I was grateful I am in the field of education. The education industry is recession-proof. People will strive to continue getting education no matter what the economy is going through. When the economy is bad, lesser people will enroll in private schools and universities but there would always be government schools that will need teachers to educate the nation.
Next, despite a crumbling economy, people get sick. Most probably, they would get sicker because of the stress and worries recessions bring. The Millennial Generation (1980-2000) is nearly as large as the Baby Boom Generation. This means that people born in this period would need additional and long-term health and medical care and wellness services making a career in healthcare a great option as well.
Lastly, it is forecasted that information technology careers and businesses would last until 2100AD or so. This consists of information technology advances, computers and gadgets that would require to be tracked in worldwide databases. Additional wireless fidelity points specifically in offices are getting into the development needs of every industry. The unique benefits and the security concerns this industry offers has been one top concern of companies. Offshore employees have also been an integral part of the work force of any company, which is one great niche that information technology industry can offer. This career also definitely pays well.
