A teacher’s primary need has less to do with money but more to do with how he is being treated and how he is being valued . Much of this depends directly on the immediate superior. More than any other single reason, he is the reason for teacher’s stay and thrive in school . He is also the reason why teacher quit, taking his knowledge and experiences with him.
He is the reason why teachers have to stay and thrive in a particular school despite of sacrifices like spending a lot for transportation and even spending for board and lodging. Administrator’s good attitude towards his teachers is of a great factor of their stay and willingness to sacrifice.
Some of the attitudes of a good administrator that keeps teachers to stay and thrive are :
- He shows respect , love and concern to his teachers . He treats them well and consider them as his family.
- He respects the rights of his teachers. Never embarrasses them in front of others and talks to them in his private office for the mistakes committed.
- He thinks of the school’s advantage and teachers’ welfare.
- He encourages teachers to show and share their knowledge and let them grow professionally by sending them to training and seminars to develop such skill and let them enroll in graduate studies.
- He acts as the father in the school. Whenever a teacher made a mistake, he talks to him in private and not embarrasses him in front of other.
- Before making such decision, he sees to it that it is legal and consider the humanitarian factors.
- He displays a modest life. No corrupt practices.
- Shows no favoritism and bias in his decisions and actions.
On the other hand, some teachers have left the teaching position or has requested for a transfer to other schools for the reason that they cannot bear the treatment given to them by their superiors. Let us not be pretentious. It is very true that there are some school administrators who are so mean to their teachers . Teachers, if they have other choices, prefer to leave their jobs, because of ill-mannered, bossy and abusive administrators. Is it because they are the boss that they have to say, unkind words to a mere teacher? In the eyes of God, everyone is equal. Everyone deserves to be treated equally and fairly. There is no principal, no school head and no ordinary teacher. We are all the same in God’s eyes.
