Akbay-Aral is a reading intervention implemented in school to encourage children to read books and read it for pleasure during a new normal. Reading will help to improve literacy skills and prepare the mind of the children with their lessons.

To better prepare the children for a home-based learning and develop a positive attitude towards reading, Cataning Elementary School headed by Mrs. Agnes O. Magdalera initiated a reading intervention for the selected children.

The activities which run from October 27 up to present have  catered 7 learners from Grades 1-5 level. The learning facilitators voluntarily helped children during the conduct of the said reading intervention.

Akbay-Aral is part of the School Memorandum of Understanding among the school principal, learning facilitators and parents/guardians which had intended to facilitate the implementation of the reading intervention and to ensure its success during distance learning.

Moreover, this is an opportunity for the selected pupils to enhance their reading ability, to express ideas about a common word and to respond respectfully to ideas others bring to the discussion.  The said activities had proven to be helpful in reducing struggling readers or learning loss.

During the intervention, the children were required to choose what kind of stories they would like to read about. The topics that usually caught their interest were given so that the interest of children in reading continued to develop.

Fortunately, Akbay-Aral was successfully implemented because of these goals:

  • Engaging children in reading and reading-related activities during the intervention.
  • Foster a love of reading through public school services.
  • Increase successful reading experiences through the support of learning facilitators, self-selected and voluntarily reading.
  • Involve parents and all family members in the school reading experience.
  • Improve children’s access to school materials and activities, which will encourage them to become wide readers.
