It is common knowledege to us that the trend during this days is that when a simple thing happens we try to connect it to our life by using “HUGOT LINES”. For some they take it as humor while for others they take it straight to their heart and very seriously. For some it makes them clearly understand a situation. So my thought is why not connect the two and see if some people would be interested to learn Mathematics.
Let me share with you some of the well known “MATH HUGOT LINES” and I will try to share my unsolicited opinion on them.
“Relationship is Like Math, you should always be careful with the signs.”
As we all know, mathematics a very meticulous subject, so as to relationship, but one thing that they have in common is once you had made a mistake while in the process of solving a problem it would be pretty difficult for your to find where or what have you done wrong. No matter what the result maybe. Be very careful with every step that you made because once you’ve committed a mistake there’s no turning back.
“Anu bang kasalanan ko, bakit ang dami mong ayaw sa akin?”
We can say that Math is really a hard subject. Especially if you lack the motivation to learn the subject. Accroding to Yahoo most Filipinos hate Math, while they normally like Filipino if they normally speak Tagalog, and others prefer English or Science. But it need one just a little patience to understand the basic concepts of Mathematics. Once that you have learned the basics of Mathematics you can easily solve problems, and see that Math is subject that no one should fear
“Find the value of X and don’t ask Y”
More and more people ask me why do we need to find the value of X. cracking jokes we usually say that we are not going to use that in our everyday life. That we are not going to buy something at the market asking for X +2 pieces of tomatoes. But for me they clearly lack the understanding of Mathematics. As our grade school teachers taught us. Math is all about numbers. But as we progress with our education, we see that the higher level we are at. The lesser number we will have and more and more variables come. This is where we apply out problem solving skills. It is not about numeracy, but the ability to think out of the box, the ability to solve problems, the concept that no should ever surrender to any problem because in the end if you use what you have learned in the end you know that there is always a solution. If at first you don’t know what are the value of the variables remember what you have learned and sooner or later you will find the answer.
Those are some HUGOT LINES that I normally see. In relation to Math, though others have a point on their first impression in Mathematics. But we as life-long learners should also see other perspective aside from what we already know. Be open-minded and optimistic that there is always a reason behind everything and Never turn down an opportunity to learn new things.
