Physical education, a core subject that focuses on the importance of fitness. When we talk about fitness, it is the level of physical fitness as they go on their physical education classes. To be able to develop physical fitness on the students, PE teachers should provide students with effective, challenging and enjoyable activities.
Speaking of activities designed to develop physical fitness, teachers should inculcate on the students four fitness components: cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength and flexibility.
In physical education traditional games such as laro ng lahi are taught. Palosebo, patintero, sipa are examples of laro ng lahi. In these traditional games, the origin, characteristics and how the games are played, the equipment and the number of players, rules of the games are taught.
Individual and dual sports such as badminton and table tennis are also learned and taught in physical education. The acquisition and development of the basic skills in these games have to be enhanced and at the same time, rules of these games are being taught.
Football, volleyball and basketball games play the major part of physical education subjects. These games are underscored considering they need more players compared with other game activities. Particularly in basketball were Filipino students are very fond of, teachers in physical education even hold sports competition mainly on basketball.
Even in city meet, students are very interested to join their schools’ basketball team. Winning in city meet, the school particularly the players have a fair chance to play in Central Luzon Regional Athletic Association (CLRAA) which is held annually.
So much so, if the basketball player has shown excellent performance in these athletic events, chances are he may be selected to join the Palarong Pambansa .
In physical education, students dream students’ dream to be a national athlete may be realized.
