Teaching requires assessment, a means of acquiring student accomplishment data. Learning attitudes affect how students manage assignments and exams. Recent study shows that student participation in peer review enhances the learning process, as Falchikov (2019) notes. Examining students’ opinions on evaluation allows them to design an honest and realistic assessment system that rewards true effort and in-depth learning over chance. Studies imply students should be accountable for their learning and include their evaluation opinions. There are three evaluation factors in education. First, create effective learning strategies for students to develop accountability habits. Second, award a degree and a result card after a student passes or fails an exam. Third, provide feedback on school and teacher efforts or abilities and hold them accountable for all performances or duties to improve students’ learning and find the significant observable influence on student performances. Assessment has two purposes: 1) to enhance education, and 2) to evaluate students’ progress. Formative assessment, sometimes called learning evaluation, helps pupils learn better.
According to William and Thompson (2018), formative assessment includes monitoring, diagnostic, and formative assessment. Monitoring assessment involves monitoring different activities or actions related to the educational learning process, such as teaching strategies for assessing students’ skills and knowledge, students’ learning abilities that the teacher promotes in the classroom, or classroom activities designed and planned for an effective teaching-learning process. It improves the efficacy of the overall educational system by showing where problems in the teaching-learning process may be detected and how to fix them throughout the session.
Diagnostic examination gives thorough information on pupils’ learning obstacles and solution to learning concerns. How can learning problems be fixed? This is examined in diagnostic tests. Formative assessment addresses what to do. Students actively participate in formative evaluation since data is collected step-by-step to improve learning. Summative evaluation is conducted after the session and utilized in decision-making since it details what the teacher taught and what the students learned. Summative evaluation provides information on student or instructor learning following a session or study time. Summative evaluation informs policymakers and decision-makers about the teaching-learning process. Summative evaluation is concerned with the performance of the whole educational system, including institutions, instructors, students, and all educational activities arranged to build an effective teaching-learning system. Summative evaluation helps teachers evaluate students’ performance based on what they’ve learned from their instructor, peers, or learning activities meant to develop critical thinking. According to Cavangah et al., while teachers and administrators choose assessment techniques and assignments, students, instructors, parents, schools, and policymakers have different assessment goals.
Assessment is vital to teaching and learning. This demonstrates that instructors employ limited evaluation methodologies and processes; nevertheless, there is little indication that formative assessment is used to change preparation and instruction. Instruction, evaluation, and results must be synchronized for optimal learning. Assessment is crucial because it affects teaching and learning outcomes. This study explores students’ perceptions on classroom assessment based on these assessment characteristics. Educators can then revise their evaluation techniques depending on student feedback. Students should be included in assessment task decision-making. For example, assessment is a comprehensive process of gathering and evaluating educational data that involves data usage, data collection, data collection techniques, and data consumers (National Research Council 2016).
