The main mission of the Department of Education (DepEd) is to achieve quality education, quality output and quality teachers in schools. But this noble mission is hindered by the lack of resources. The department is somewhat always in a struggle to provide all the needs of the students as well as teachers.
Imagine a class composed of 60 or more pupils. No matter how efficient and effective the teachers are, one cannot expect quality education in this manner. According to a former DepEd secretary, the ideal number of students in a class in order to produce quality output in the elementary grades is 25 to 30, a common practice in other countries. If implemented, no doubt our teachers would be very happy and comfortable inside classrooms. Non- readers among students could be easily identified.
Other problems are lack of classrooms and desks, insufficient books and other teaching materials. If our system of education does not change, we could not get the quality of education we are aspiring.
These weaknesses of our education system should be seriously studied upon to come up with workable solutions.
Our education system is definitely not a hopeless case. The good thing is that we have identified and admitted the real state of our education sector. Surely, if we all work together towards a common goal, the quality education for our children and the next generation can be achieved.
