Effective communication is important and necessary in solving conflicts in an existing society full of complexities. We should know first the barriers to have an effective communication.

There are ten barriers to effective communication which are explained here:

  1. Semantics-The words we utter have multiple meanings that vary in different situations in which they are used. Be aware of that.
  2. Filtering-It is sifting of information to make it appear more favourable or unfavourable than it really is. You must be careful in choosing words to be used and language must to be considered.
  3. Distortion-Sometimes it happens because of mechanical failure such as defects in the optical system or false reproduction caused by change in the wave form or signal.
  4. Overloading-Our communication system is taxed by increasing the number of communications transmitted through the organization.
  5. Routing- The more complex route the greater the barrier to good and effective communication.
  6. Layers- The number of levels through which a communication may travel often affects the action that will result.
  7. Interpretation-The intended meaning of communication may change through one’s perception of intended meaning.
  8. Readability- There are some who really find difficult to comprehend and understand the meaning of message, when complicated sentences are written or spoken.
  9. Abstraction-It is often occurs when something is omitted in the description of an actual situation whether intentionally or not. The abstracting process omits details so that we communicate about reality.
  10. Timing- To obtain accurate results, some message should be release simultaneously; others may maybe according to determined schedule.
