In just a blink of eye, more efficient and new technologies were invented, spaceship and space travel were launched, fully bionic man, advancement in the field of medicine, there are so many CHANGES. These so-called “changes” are so usual in the living world. Somehow, they are considered as permanent. In just one glance, look, we are now living in the K to 12 world.
Kinder + six years in elementary + 4 years in junior high school + 2 years in senior high school = K to 12. This type of curriculum was implemented two years ago in the Philippines thinking that this will uplift the value of education in this archipelago, improve and enhance the skills and capabilities of the students. Because these students, which make up the ‘youth’, is the hope of this nation, like what our national hero has once said. Youth of today’s generation who will build a better future and will eventually boost the economic development of our country. Do this course, K to 12, has really the ability to ring the bells of change?
But just like any other growing business, schools have also met many hindrances and problems because of the sudden change in the program of studying and one of these is Mariveles National High School – Poblacion. Since the classrooms cannot accommodate the whole population, classes were shifted while additional rooms were built. Books and other facilities were not enough, sometimes, it’s lacking. One time, a K to 12student says “Kung papakaisiping mabuti, maganda yung K to 12 kasi mas lalong maeenhance yung skills naming pero on the other side, hindi rin naman sapat yung mga gamit like yung libro para sa’ming lahat.”
Once, there’s this teacher saying, “Maganda yung K to 12 compared dun sa dati kasi less talk para sa’min and more activities para sa mga students kaya masasabi mong iniimprove talaga nito yung skill ng bata.” From this, we can infer that K to 12 is really good in in developing a child or a pupil. But this is not where this ends, “Kaya lang tuwing activity may mga needed materials na hindi kayang iafford ng mga bata na yun yung nagiging problema.”
Two years. Two years had already passed. And we can tell that we survived this two years living under the course K to 12. Things were given not for us to always think of the problems that may arise in implementing it or using it. Always bear in our minds that we should always focus on the brighter side. There’s no problem with risking sometimes. Risk something and gain something better in return. If we will just learn to help each other in developing things through K to 12, no matter how many hindrances we may encounter, no matter how slow or fast we will adapt to this curriculum, we, together with K to 12, will be able to ring the bells of change.
