You may have read these lines written by Sir William Oster,a famous writer.” Nothing will sustain you more potently than the power to recognize in your humdrum routine as perhaps it may be thought, the true poetry of life- he poetry of the common place of ordinary man, of the plain, toil-worn woman, with their lives and their lives and joys, their sorrows and their grief’s”.
Relating poetry writing to make the children understand and learn more different language macro skills, language authorities claimed that poetry writing and reading can help increase the language proficiency, fluency and eloquence. Poetry is also an important part of the reading program of any school. Poetry reading and writing provides a great opportunity for the children to feel that they are authors, that they own their productions and that they have an audience who recognizes and appreciates their works.
Some teachers think that poetry writing and reading is meant for older children. In their opinion, poetry is nothing but rhymes, verses and figures of speech. It is common belief that poetry writing is for are for poets, or for older kids, or for those who are already good at reading. Surprisingly, when we ventured on poetry writing, in elementary or secondary love, the result will be satisfying both for children and the teachers. Children’s are young poets. They can create images and impressions that we, adults may not be able to, or forgotten how to do.
Routman (2000) gave some reasons to each poetry:
- Children can express their ideas.
- It makes children to love more their language.
- It makes them learn correct choice of words.
- To requires their classmates to listen.
- Parents will be inspired to see their children write poems.
To ensure success inpoetry writing, it requires teachers to love, appreciate and understand poetry as a powerful way to express and convey feelings and thoughts.
