The Continuing Studies via Television (CONSTEL) explains the distinctive characteristics of writing as a macro skill and the ways of teaching it.  It says that writing is an art of communication.   Good writers consider two things before putting anything on paper thatis purpose and audience. These things will shape the appropriate style of writing.  Teachers must be aware that teaching writing is a process.  It requires a great amount of stored knowledge, analysis and thinking beforehand.   A teacher must have the skill of stopping, going back, reversing, thinking, revising and refining his/her thoughts.

There are many factors to consider being an effective, interesting, attractive and tasteful teacher of writing.   He / She must be aware that a written product is consists of stages or steps that the teacher must disseminate to his/her students.  Like speaking, writing is a productive skill, because something is generated, and we cannot generate a product creatively if the students are not prepared.  To avoid too much revision on the part of the learners, the teacher must give time for the students to master if possible grammar, usage, punctuation and vocabulary.  CONSTEL further stressed that the teacher must see to it that they explain the general view of writing. They must explain that writing is considered a process when the teacher sees to it that students go through in several stages in producing a piece of writing. Research claims that these are the very same steps that good writers observe in composing such as starting with an overall plan in mind. , including what they want to say and who they are writing for, drafting sections of the writing and constantly reviewing, revising and editing their work.  To widen readership of students’ written work, teachers must help learners to direct their writing product to a specific audience.  The audience may be the writer himself/herself, a friend, a classmate, the teacher, the principal, strangers or parents.

Most importantly, the teacher must be a writer himself/herself, since he/she cannot share what he/she doesn’t have.
