Bilingual Education as it involves teaching academic content in two languages in a native and a secondary language with varying amounts of each language used in accordance with the program model.
With that definition, our country has implemented bilingualism in primary education few years back. It has observed then that this kind of education is very costly. It costs much more to educate minority-language in bilingual classes than it does to run dominant language only. Bilingual education allows minority language speakers to resist assimilation and unknowingly avoiding learning the dominant language. They want to live as a part of mainstream society but are unwilling to change or give up their language or culture.
Using the dominant language does not necessarily mean forgetting or taking for granted our mother tongue language, the dominant language must be the language of choice inside the classroom for better communication and comprehension. With this, we as teachers can be a great tool in order for our students to be globally competitive as far as English literacy and proficiency is concerned.
