Education Secretary Leonor Briones served as the keynote speaker in the 2019 National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) held at Lingayen Pangasinan on January 14, 2019. In her speech, she reiterated the significance of including programs in the school curricula that will teach students skills intended to help them differentiate true information from the fake ones.
Speaking in front of about 5,000 campus journalists, Briones urged them to distinguish journalism from propaganda and they should be able to discern the truth from falsehood and manufactured news from real news. She stated that if they use the Journalist’s Creed, it clearly affirms that every journalist must always seek the truth.
All journalists must be open-minded especially during this times when propaganda is becoming equally realistically “truthful” even though its main objective is to spread misrepresentation. Keeping their eyes and ears closed with this issue may one day be a hindrance in proving the credibility of all future journalists.
The secretary of education headed the DepEd delegation in the NSPC during its annual gathering of campus journalists from 18 regions of the country.
