One of the things that a teacher should be aware of, especially if he or she is new
in his/her profession, is establishing a positive relationship between the teacher and the student.
So, the first thing that teachers must do is to observe and analyze the behavior pattern of the students., to have a grasp of the characteristics of each child. The teacher must not forget that every child is unique. They have their own individual differences. From this initial move, the teacher may know how to establish a positive relationship with the students.
According to Tenedero, a well-known advocator of the Multiple Intelligences, the differences of the students vary from the way they feel and prefer when it comes to light, temperature, sound in the classroom. Another factor to be consideredare the elements of emotions, which are motivation and persistence. If students are well-motivated there will be a smooth class discussion.and positive attitude in their studies, and if the students are persistent they can easily finish a task already begun. A teacher must also analyze if a student is conformist or noncomformist.. Nonconformity does not necessarily imply disinterest. If one student is highly noncomformist he may have difficulty working with others. On the other hand, if a student is highly conforming, he will be satisfied and secured when following instructions.
The teacher must also look for, observe and analyze the perceptual strengths of the students, their learning styles and other psychological preferences . Teachers must determine if a student is visual, auditory, tactile or kinesthetic.
A teacher must not also forget the negative behavior and attitude of the students which should be straightened, through the help of their parents; for instance, truancy, absenteeism, being quarrelsome, bullying and other disciplinary problems. By correcting these disciplinary problems, the teacher will surely have a positive relationship with the students.
As I. Edgar Hoover puts it “Show me a home in which the parents practice self-discipline and I’ll show you a home where a mother and a fatherhold the love and respect of their children. A youngster asks only to be taught the boundaries of acceptable behavior. Discipline fairly and consistently invoked breeds pride and respect. And children want—desperately to be disciplined.”
Summing it up, a strong rapport with students establishes trusting and positive relationship.
