Bullying in schools has been getting increasing attention. Most children experience some sort of bullying while in school, whether they are the perpetrators or the victims. The most common types of bullying are enumerated below.
1. Verbal Bullying- Name-calling is hurtful and occurs far too often, but verbal bullying is not only name-calling. Verbal bullying also includes making jokes about a person’s race or physical features. Most children choose not to speak out against other children when they are being made fun of even though they don’t like what is being said about them. Verbal bullying often has a very negative impact on the victim’s self-esteem. Verbal bullying is the most common form of bulling that occurs in school, according to the Bullying in Schools website.
2. Physical Bullying- Physical bullying occurs when one child uses physical aggression as a means to control the actions of another child or as a means of intimidating another child. Physical bullying is considered any type of physical contact with another child or person that is harmful. It also includes taking and destroying something that belongs to someone else.
3. Intimidation- Intimidation is an active form of bullying that often leaves the victims feeling scared. Bullies use intimidation by threatening to harm their victims if they do not do what they are told. Intimidation can be carried out through verbal or physical bullying.
Not just as educators but as guidance counselors as well, it lies on our hands how to address these types of bullying. By providing proper conducts to avoid this assertiveness, we direct our pupils to where should they be.
