Before the children enter the school, they should have already been crowned with simple knowledge regarding their family religion and the teaching of God through their parents- that is one of their religious obligations. But it is already a proven fact that most of the children do not even know their Creator. If you ask them, some will answer;” My father and mother, ma’am”. The rest would just open their eyes innocently.

The truth of the matter is that their parents are not attending to this inalienable need of their children because they themselves do not care about the importance of knowing and practicing their religion. I do not only know if this is also true to some teachers.

This is impossible to many of us but it may also be true to a few. The catechetical instruction in the public schools is a clear and valid solution to this erring problem. Pupils are taught about the teaching of God, to pray, to honor God and to go to church to hear mass irrespective of their religion, thus learning what is right and wrong, which is values education.

It is observed that those pupils who seldom or never go to the church are those whose parents are not church goers. If the teacher has the same feathers, he does not care to remind his pupils to go and hear mass.

Parents and teachers, the catechetical instruction in the public schools is the opening gate of the church to our school children. It is the time to join hands with them in directing our children to honor God, our Creator and Saviour, by attending the mass on Saturdays or Sundays. It is also a solution to the ills of our times and makes it as responsibility to everyone.
