Most of us taking this course will be a parent someday, some of us already are. Each of us takes seriously the importance of rearing our children because they are the future of our society.
Parenting is a very important profession; no test of fitness for it is even impaired. If a test impaired, some parents would turnout to be more fit than others. Most parents do want their children to grow mentally, physically, spritually, socially mature individuals, but they often are not sure about what to do as parents to help their children to reach their goals. One of the reasons for the frustration of parents is that they often get conflicting messages about how to deal with their children.
The powerful factors that influence children are parental control and parental support. Control as the ability of parents to manage a child’s behavior. Since parents are bigger than children, they can use physical means to ensure good behavior at least while the children are smaller. Other controls by making children feel guilty or obligated.
Support was seen as the ability to make the children feel loved. Supportive parents express love for loved is easily understood term and they do it often. They give loving physical demonstration of their love by hugging, kissing and patting.
Some of the factors that influence the children by their parents’ ways of parenting are:
- 1.Neglectful parenting – parents are low on support and low on control.
- 2.Authoritarian parenting – parents are low on support and high on control.
- 3.Permissive parenting – parents are high on support and low on control.
- 4.Authoritative parenting – parents were high on support and high on control.
Good parenting takes considerable amount of time. If you choose to become a parent you should be willing to commit yourself minute after minute, day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year, providing your children with warm, supportive, safe and stimulating environment that will allow them to reach their full potentials as human being. Understanding the nature of children development can help you to become a better parent.
Like parenting, education is an extremely important dimension of children’s lives. When we think of education we usually associate it with school. Schools are extremely important aspect of education as well, but it also occurs in contexts other than schools. Children learn from their parents, from their siblings, from their peers, from books, from watching television and from computers as well.
Schools focus on developing the child’s knowledge, cognitive skills, play attention to the whole child and consider child’s socio-emotional and physical development as well.
Good parenting and good education serve as important basis for the development of competent children.
