Teaching is a career that provides challenges, excitement, personal reward and a chance to encourage and support others to achieve their goals. Good teachers know that by listening to and working with colleagues, parents, other professionals and community members that they can inspire students and improve their learning.
There are many personal qualities and skills that make someone a good teacher.
Preparedness. Effective teachers come to class each day ready to teach. It is easy to learn in their class because they are ready for the day. They don’t waste instructional time, start class on time and teach for the entire class period. Because of these, time flies in their classes because students are engaged in learning and gives them no time to be bored and sleepy.
Optimism. Effective teachers have optimistic attitudes about teaching and about students. They always look on the positive side of every situation. They make themselves available to student and communicate regularly with them about their progress. They give praise and recognition and adopt strategies to help students act positively toward one another
Hold High Expectations. Effective teachers set no limits on students and believe everyone can be successful. They hold the highest standards which consistently challenge their students to do their best and build students’ confidence.
Creativeness. The most effective teachers are resourceful and inventive in how they teach their classes. They make things out of indigenous materials and those available in the community. They construct materials that could attract the interest of the students and use technology effectively in the classroom
Fairness. Effective teachers handle students and grading fairly. They allow all students equal opportunities and privileges and provide clear requirements for the class. They maintain that students learn in the same way and at the same rate and recognize the need to give every student an opportunity to succeed
Display Personal Touch. Effective teachers are approachable. They connect personally with their students to better understand their predicaments and share with their personal experiences to inspire them.
Cultivate a Sense of Belongingness. Effective teachers make students feel welcome and comfortable in their classrooms. They instil in the students that sense of belongingness and make the students believe that they are loved and cared for.
Compassionate. Effective teachers shows concern about students’ personal problems and help them resolve the conflict. They prove how the sensitivity and compassion of caring teachers affected them in profound and lasting ways.
Have a Sense of Humor. Effective teachers make learning fun and easy. They bring humor into the classroom everyday and make the discussion lively. The laugh with the class, but not at the expense of someone in the class.
