Serving the government has different requirements to be met; one of these is the civil service eligibility. Most people know about the Career Service Professional and Sub-Professional eligibilities, but these are not the only way to obtain civil service eligibility. There are other different eligibilities under special laws for qualified individuals.

Under RA 1080, bar examination passers and licensure board examination passers are automatically granted eligibility. These individuals shall be appointed to positions where they can practice their professions that are regulated by the Philippine Bar/Board Laws. Examples of these professions are doctors, lawyers, nurses, medical technicians, pharmacists, teachers and engineers.

For those serving in the barangay, they may fall under the Barangay Health Worker Eligibility (RA 7883), Barangay Nutrition Scholar Eligibility (PD 1569) or Barangay Official Eligibility (RA 7160). To be qualified under the first eligibility, one must have at least two (2) years of college education and has served at least five (5) years of continuous and satisfactory health worker to the community. For the second eligibility, the individual must have rendered at least two (2) years of continuous and satisfactory nutrition services and other related activities to the barangay. The last one covers Barangay Elective and Appointive Barangay Officials that have completed their terms of office. Even without undergoing an examination, the services these individuals gave are enough to be recognized by the government.

A veteran or his/her spouse and children are entitled to a Veteran Preference Rating Eligibility (EO #132 and EO #790). This gives the qualified persons an additional ten (10) points to a failed rating (as long as it is not less than 70) for the following examinations: Career Service Professional and Sub-Professional, Fire Officer and Penology Officer. This preference rating is in a way, a simple gesture of thanking our veterans for their service to the country.

These different eligibilities are just a few of those under the special laws. If you are interested in applying to the government, aside from having the civil service eligibility, one must bear in mind the core reason for working under the government. It should not be merely about the salary or the prestige of being in the position. One should have the heart to serve one’s country.
