Classroom teachers’ most important job is managing the classroom effectively. It has great impact on students’ achievement and can work across all subject areas. Classroom management can also promote the productivity and reduce the misbehavior of the students.
However, classroom management and management of students’ conduct are skills that teachers acquire and hone over time. Teachers should not assume that the students have already had the knowledge about the appropriate classroom behaviors. According to Emmer, Evertson, and Worsham, important components of classroom management include beginning the school year with a positive emphasis on management; arranging the room in a way conducive to effective management; and identifying and implementing rules and operating procedures. These will make thestudents aware of what are expected from them. Moreover, applyingthis system throughout the year will reinforce positive student behavior.
In addition, the quality of relationship of the students and teachers is the source for all other aspects of classroom management. Teachers should have assertive body language and maintain their posture by using an appropriate tone of voice when speaking and by avoiding any display of emotions in the voice. Teachers should also listen to legitimate explanationsand do not ignore an inappropriate behavior of the students. Students respect their teachers who stay calm in spite of chaotic environment that the teachers are facing.
Hence, teachers must have effective classroom management that establishes and sustains an orderly environment in the classroom because it increases meaningful academic learning and facilitates social and emotional growth to the students.
