Rewards and incentives are useful in classroom. These are ways to manage behavior showing that good things done by kids are appreciated. Proper use of rewards and incentives is a useful tool if teachers use them properly to encourage positive attitudes and learning.
In giving rewards, we should avoid food and sweets. Candies and sweets are pleasurable but giving these things will definitely promote unhealthy eating habits in kids during crucial developmental years. The best rewards are those that make children feel proud and special without contributing to unhealthy habits.
The following are high suggested as rewards and incentives to kids who have worked hard and made great improvement.
- Certificates – A young child feels proud seeing his name written on a colorful certificate. Certificates of accomplishment and other awards carry a special significance when given for achievement in classroom subjects.
- Stamps and Stickers – Stamps work well for children who need a visual task reminder. Stickers are helpful for children who are building specific habits, such as staying on task, staying seated or completing daily assignments. Teachers may stock reward box with small stickers and allow a pupil to choose the reward that appeal to him.
- School Supplies – Pencil or notebook with colorful artwork and popular characters on it are exciting to a child who uses basic supplies every day. For demonstrating good behavior, teachers may give unique supplies to children as prizes. These are also useful, quick and immediate rewards for moments when a child surprises a teacher with insights.
