CLEAR QUESTIONS: GUIDE TO BETTER PUPIL UNDERSTANDING

After every lesson, teachers subject the pupils to an evaluation.  An evaluation can either be written or oral.  This is a gauge whether the pupils understand the lessons or there is a need to augment the strategy applied to make them more responsive.  Always, the key lies on how teachers throw questions.  And pupils respond better with clear questions.

As teachers, how can we give clear questions?  These are simple tips but worth trying.  These can be adopted and serve us well in the future.

Clarify points.  The teacher’s points must be precise.  And there should be an effort to clarify important matters to erase gray matters on the lesson presented.

Listen to feedback.  Pupils may be reacting to what has been presented to them.  Do not discourage the pupils with these.  Listen to them and clarify all queries.

Emphasize more significant points. Sometimes, teachers thought that the points have been properly cleared.  But there are more significant points which need to be clarified.  Analyze all points and discern which is best for clarity.

Allow active participation from the pupils.  Participative discussion can be annoying because of the noise.  But pupils learn more when they are directly involved in the delivery of the lessons.  Do not discourage them from doing so, they might present ideas which we have missed.

Recall your last remarks.  The last remarks remain in the minds of the pupils.  And since these are the most important points of the lessons, do not hesitate to recall and repeat so that these will register well in their minds.

So the next time you pose a question to the pupils, make it CLEAR.  For sure, the result will better.

            Next question please.
