Mathematics has been proven to be one of the most interesting subjects. However, it is not a hidden fact that there are a lot of students who hate the subject and keep on telling that it is difficult particularly on some complex lessons. In this sense, teachers need to look on efficient strategies on teaching Math that may help students be interested, appreciate and love the subject.
It is therefore a duty of every Mathematics teacher to be knowledgeable and skillful enough to utilize techniques that will encourage maximum participation among his students. Allowing a child to involve even in small group learning activities is one of the best techniques that will develop his interest towards the subject. This is called collaborative learning in which students are divided into small groups in which they are encouraged to work together towards an academic task. It will help him express his ideas which he is hesitant to do on a whole class setting. This will likewise give him the courage to be active not knowing that in the longer run he is developing love, interest and appreciation towards Math with the help of his peers in the group.
Proponents of this collaborative learning stated that when students work together in small groups their learning improves, their problem solving skills are enhanced, social relationships likewise improves and they develop a more positive attitude towards learning.
In collaborative learning teachers can be saved from being verbose. And desirable effects of group learning can be achieved more readily on small group discussion with five to ten members is advisable.
