Pupils want to feel that they are getting a good deal. How to interact with them is usually one concern that worries the majority of the beginning teachers. Some find it difficult to control the class. They may be heard complaining that they can’t work properly due to the intense noise inside the room. Others make use of force and fear to rule the class. They prefer to give punishment rather than rewards. Some seem to be trendy to the point that all kids love them. They really care about the kids and know all their problems.
Teachers are professional and hardworking individuals who don’t exactly fit any of these stereotypes. What counts the most is that the teacher should know how to manage her pupils properly. The relationship with the pupils is the most important thing to work on for any teacher.
There are many ways how to deal with them. One thing is that teachers should be fair but firm. They must be consistent in giving praise and punishment so they will not be seen to have favorites. They should be organized to ensure that when they arrive at each lesson they know what they are teaching. This makes pupils feel that they are treated responsibly. Moreover, teachers must be gentle. They must carefully choose the words of praise and avoid confrontational screaming match.
A teacher must above all be fair, in control and approachable. The pupils are great imitators and want their teachers to be smart professionals. They want to be taught by someone they trust because that is what it takes for pupils to earn teachers’ respect.
