There is a variation from school to school in the type of Mathematics courses offered in the junior high school students particularly grade 7 through grade 9 .Not all students of the same grade in a particular school will take the same courses . Students with more background and ability will usually take more advanced course than the average or weaker student . For some youngsters in the middle school or Junior high school mathematics will consist primarily of th review extension , and application of familiar math skills and concepts . For others, the math curriculum consist primarily of preparation , for the most rigorous courses in algebra , geometry , and trigonometry of high school.
All students will be offered at least one course in which previously taught skills – those involving numbers , measurement , geometry, patterns and functions, statistics, probability and logical reasoning are strengthened and taught in greater depth. Some students will take a pre algebra class. Some will take a transition course that combines applied mathematics with pre-algebra and pre-geometry topics and concepts . Others will undertake a course made up of a combination of consumer business applications for a variety of real-life topics and situations: earning and spending money , budgeting ,banking , taxes, insurance, housing, and transportation . The more able eight graders will be offered an algebra course.
The college-bound ninth grade student studies high school level algebra or occasionally formal geometry. Algebra is also an option for non- college bound students , or they may study general mathematics or business math.
Some students may end their experience with school mathematics in the ninth grade. More and more states are adapting more rigorous mathematics standards, however, some districts must pass high level mathematics courses to meet the requirements.
