What is ‘Multiple Intelligence’? In the profession of teaching we often come across the term ‘Multiple Intelligence’, but how much do we actually know about the concept.

            Multiple intelligence was conceptualized by Howard Gardner, a Professor and Psychologist in Harvard University Graduate School 1999. Multiple Intelligence is divided in eight (8) categories.

Verbal-linguistics intelligence

            Children or people with this kind of intelligence have their way with words. They are fond of reading, writing and learning languages. They are also great speakers and teachers, they do well at explaining and debating.

Logistic-mathematical Intelligence

            As the name implies, these are the people with greater skills in analytical and logical aspect.

Kinesthetic Intelligence

            This intelligence bracket involved the love and talent in sports and dancing, or other things that includes physical activities.

Visual Intelligence

            Peoples with visual intelligence are very aware of their environment. They take liking on drawing, painting and arts-crafts. They are also good navigator and have great sense of direction.

Musical intelligence

            This kind of intelligence’s inclined to music. May it be strings, pipe or drums? Usually they are sharp-eared individuals.

Interpersonal intelligence

            Interpersonal intelligence means that a person has a great social skill. They can easily interact and understand other people.

Intrapersonal Intelligence

            People under this intelligence bracket are independent individuals. Their highs are in assessing once self and setting self -goals.

Naturalist Intelligence

            Among all the intelligence group this is the newest addition. People under this, are nature bound and very fond of nature and its inhabitants. They like growing and nurturing things.

            The idea of multiple intelligence proves that there is more than one way of proving once mental capacity. If a student does not excel in one aspect, this does not mean that they are not going to excel in others. And some can also do well in two or more brackets. It is important that teachers asses the students, so that they would know the kind of approach to use. This way students will learn better and therefore they could have more positive results.
