Differentiated instruction entails teaching relatively similar content and material to all students which uses a range of methodologies. Teachers know that each student has uniqueness and struggles, as well as interests, aptitudes, and learning styles that must be acknowledged.  In a nutshell, it is the process of determining how each student learns best and then personalizing instruction to meet those needs.

This type of instruction is essential because it allows the teacher to connect with students who possess various learning styles. A class lecture may not be effective with all students; a game or a video may be more effective with others. A few students may benefit better by reading than by using a computer. The teacher should precisely explain the learning targets and achievement criteria for differentiated instruction to be efficacious. As a catalyst of change, they must recognize and respond to student needs immediately, fostering a nurturing classroom environment in which students value divergence for themselves and their classmates.

Similarly, differentiation enables learners to develop and grow based on their preferences, competencies, and capabilities. In DepEd Balanga City, for example, Kinder teachers, particularly at Cataning Integrated School, use differentiated activities in their classes. Teachers make it a point to incorporate this type of instruction into their daily group activities. These are tailored to each group’s strengths which include puzzles, coloring, writing a short poem, singing, dancing, and many other activities to showcase learners’ talents and abilities. Rubrics are also used to ensure a fair assessment of students’ work. This one-of-a-kind strategy improves learners’ skills and motivates them.

Undoubtedly, differentiated instruction is realized when the teacher is willing to think outside the box and strive for the success of every learner.0
