Technology has become an integral part of 21st century education. The phrase ‘education for the 21st century’ acknowledges that we are in a time of rapid change and an increasingly globalized environment, and that education systems must adapt to these changes continuously, rather than simply through a single reform. However, we must be conscious to the reality that technology can be both beneficial and harmful for learners and educators within the bounds of the classroom and learning environment. In this writing, some of the pros and cons of Digital Tools in the teaching and learning process as well as some tips how challenges may be resolved were discussed.
It is undeniable that Digital Tools make the learning process exciting for learners while it lessens the arduous task for teachers to do all the talking while teaching and save them a lot of time and money from the laborious creation of non-digitized instructional materials. To further, the world will definitely not turn back to the way of the past. We can only look forward to more developments, advancements and digital transformations in the education system. Thus, integration of digital tools in the classroom prepares students for the future. It is vital for learners to have a strong understanding of technology and how they can make the most of them in order to prepare them in their future academic endeavors and even in their interaction with the world in general.
It is never too early for young children to start learning skills and knowledge that will help them succeed in school and in their future careers. Hence, introduction to proper use of technology at an early age is a fantastic approach to start laying the groundwork for their future success. Moreover, technology encourages spontaneous learning which is beneficial for learners, teachers and even parents. As teaching and learning ought not to stop inside the classroom, technology allows for spontaneous learning which can happen at home or any place with access to technology.
On the other note, technology and digital tools have its downside which should not be put aside. One of the notable problems with technology is its limitless possibilities which can distract students. As the cliché ‘too much of anything is bad’ conveys, the boundlessness of technology provides access to inappropriate content or information. Hence, appropriate security measures should be safeguarded. Website blocks, internet filters, and tight supervision are necessary to prevent students from being exposed to content that can be detrimental to their wellbeing. Also, immersion to courses on netiquette and responsible internet use can be enabled to implant good web judgment and habits among children as early as possible.
Technology is always engaging that is why it is a good tool for teaching. However, that very reason points to another con as it removes children from opportunities of socialization. Many studies attested that technology, particularly, gadgets or devices along with the internet, are the main causes of detachment and isolation among individuals. Young children who spend more time on electronics may spend less time socializing with their classmates in the real world, which can have a negative impact on their social and emotional development. In order to mitigate this danger, technology time should be limited to allow for real social interactions with family and friends.
Similarly, the vast possibilities of technology and digital tools, although a positive aspect, leads to another con which is deterrence of creativity among teachers and learners. In bygone days, teachers work hard for their instructional materials. Their creativity and passion are evidently shown on each instructional material that they create. There was no slides presentation, no videos or audio-visual materials instead they create big books, pop-it books, posters, diorama, galleries and the like. Likewise, student’s creativity was greatly encouraged on the outputs and projects required from them. Nevertheless, such can also be stimulated in technology driven teaching and learning process. Selecting digital tools that promote creative development and problem-solving skills, and providing a wide array of other learning tools, like manipulatives or art supplies, can ensure that children are benefitting from the educative process in a safe and constructive way.
Indeed, as much as digital tools create tremendous advantages, it also has as much flaws. But no one size fits all. We can only make the necessary adjustments to make the most out of it.
