Supervisors are leaders.  As such, a supervisor needs to have the qualities of a good leader.  One’s style of leadership influences the quality of one’s supervision.  The directive behavior of a supervisor directs and controls the behavior of the group to ensure that the task at hand gets done.

How a supervisor leads is indicative of his directive behavior.  A good supervisor has exceptional directive behavior if he exhibits the following:

  1. Specifies the goal and the desired performance of his people.  A supervisor clarifies the goal of the organization and explains to all stakeholders the expected performance of everyone.
  2. Have definite guidelines and directions on expected behavior.  A supervisor outlines the direction of the team.  He gives clear instructions on the expected outcome of a specific activity.
  3. Organizes step by step plan.  A supervisor has a detailed step on how a task can be accomplished.  This makes the steps undertaken by everyone crystal clear and easier to monitor.

  5. Supervises and oversees the tasks.  A supervisor simply supervises and guides the team toward the attainment of the goal.

A supervisor SHOWS directive behavior toward the team and simply serves as a guide.  His concern for the behavior of the group leads to the attainment of the goal.
