“Success in not just a matter of knowledge and skills. It requires courage and commitment – the courage to be a leader.”
Supervisors are leaders. As such, a supervisor needs to have the qualities of a good leader. One’s style of leadership influences the quality of one’s supervision. The directive behavior of a supervisor directs and controls the behavior of the group to ensure that the task at hand gets done.
How a supervisor leads is indicative of his directive behavior. A good supervisor has exceptional directive behavior if he exhibits the following:
- Specifies the goal and the desired performance of his people. A supervisor clarifies the goal of the organization and explains to all stakeholders the expected performance of everyone.
- Have definite guidelines and directions on expected behavior. A supervisor outlines the direction of the team. He gives clear instructions on the expected outcome of a specific activity.
- Organizes step by step plan. A supervisor has a detailed step on how a task can be accomplished. This makes the steps undertaken by everyone crystal clear and easier to monitor.
- W
- Supervises and oversees the tasks. A supervisor simply supervises and guides the team toward the attainment of the goal.
A supervisor SHOWS directive behavior toward the team and simply serves as a guide. His concern for the behavior of the group leads to the attainment of the goal.
