According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, Discipline is a rule or system of rules governing conduct or activity. In a classroom situation, discipline is not just a rule for an activity. It is a guide for the teacher and the student to have a smooth teaching-learning environment.
To implement classroom discipline, an effective teacher must have an effective classroom management. The teacher uses different techniques and strategies to manage student behavior and attitude during instructional time. The following are examples of a good class management.
Proper motivation keeps the students interested in every lesson. Focus on the lesson is important for the student to learn. Modern technology is a very helpful and powerful tool to get the attention of the student.
Create a positive environment in class. This will help them engaged in their work. Always praise them, make laugh with them and be fair.
Give students opportunities. Let them lead the class. Give them responsibilities to make them feel that they are important and trusted
Lead by an example. Teacher is always the role model in class
Remember, discipline is different with punishment. When we discipline a student, it doesn’t mean that we are just giving him punishment. When we say discipline, we help the child to develop a conscience- “the internal voice” that directs him to do this or that.
Discipline gives the student a feeling of security to know where his boundaries, limits and freedom are. He needs to live according to certain standards in order to have less feeling of guilt. Inner growth in the form of self-discipline and self-control by the individual or what we call positive concept of discipline is believed to be much better than controlling individuals by external authority.
In school or even at home, there is a need for discipline to add the happiness and adjustment of the student. It is everybody’s role for the students to guide them, to correct them to become a successful citizen.
