The covid-19 pandemic had showed us the two faces of learning. Comparison between distance learning and face-to-face classes may sound cliché. However, the face-to-face class after hitting the pandemic is undeniably different from the face-to-face classes before the pandemic.
Distance learning during the pandemic includes a variety of modalities such as modular, online, radio-based, and tv-based learning depending on the convenience of the learners. It brings difficulty not only to learners but also to teachers to have better access to quality learning and teaching. Monitoring learners’ progress is also a big challenge. Webinars and relevant training were conducted to train teachers. In addition, the Department of Education also maximized the allotted time to produce quality-assured materials and adjusted the beginning of the school year from June to August to assure the readiness and the education of the learners won’t be compromised. However, even though we prepared a lot, we cannot deny that there are unanticipated gaps and problems that arise during the first weeks of the school year. But later, teachers are flexible enough to overcome these problems and adapt to the current situation. On the other hand, as we compare this to this school year’s face-to-face classes, we are like newbies starting to cope up again in the field of teaching. Everyday is a war. It seems like we are always in a battlefield fighting against the learning losses due to this pandemic. Unlimited diagnostic tests and intervention are on our way. And yes, this is the result of the two-year distance learning. We can see that meeting our learners face-to-face is more effective than printing materials and giving them activities at home.
Amidst of these chaotic dilemmas, we are still teachers—-the silent heroes before, during and after the pandemic. Whatever the situation is, we must embrace it with open arms and do the best that we can for our learners.
