Do you think it is better to require remedial programs in the Philippine education system, specifically in the primary and secondary levels?

It is preferable to have a remedial program in the Philippines’ educational system since not every student has the same learning potential as the rest of the class. This would allow students to catch up with the rest of the class while also being assisted with their academic weaknesses. According to (Green, 2020), The goal of remedial teaching is to assist pupils to catch up to their classmates and avoid further academic problems. When learners fall behind, a divide between their capabilities and those of their peers opens up. This disparity develops with time, to the point that it affects learning in other fields.

In the Philippines’ educational system, remedial help is offered to learners who have received very poor grades or who have a grade average of less than 75. As stated by (the Republic of the Philippines Department of Education, 2021), A learner who obtains a grade in any particular subject that is lower than 75 must go through a remedial program and pass the remedial courses

that would be given to advance to the next grade level. Moreover, schools may also require learners to attend make-up classes. The Philippines’ DepEd guideline would undoubtedly assist pupils who are having academic difficulties and those who are in need of a remedial program. However, teachers must properly facilitate the implementation of the remedial program since it will have a significant impact on the students’ long-term learning. Furthermore, this could also be an opportunity for the teacher to address the student’s academic inadequacies and encourage the student to study more diligently in the future. According to (Sudhakar, 2018), Remedial teachers must encourage students to establish positive learning habits and attitudes, such as finishing tasks on time and being responsible and disciplined. A positive attitude is a cornerstone for lifelong self-learning and aids in the learning efficacy of students.

Reading, writing, and math are the three most fundamental foundations in learning, hence remedial programs for younger children tend to focus on these three skills According to a (Newsletter, 2003) Reading, writing, and math are (or should be) inextricably linked. Before students read or write about a topic, they may use hands-on mathematics to pique their curiosity, pique their interest, and establish critical previous knowledge. The more pupils understand and learn about a topic, the more they will understand and learn from the writings on the subject. This is one of the reasons why remedial instruction at the primary level is critical because it can help students address their bad academic habits while they are still young. Students with academic issues would benefit from proper remedial instruction if it were implemented properly by the teacher. (Gayathri, 2021) Stated that there should be nothing improper with a youngster learning at his or her own speed. Every child is unique and distinct in their own way. If there is a gap between what they should know in school at their age and what they really know, they will need help and encouragement to close it. In this case, remedial classes may be beneficial.

While the remedial program for primary levels focuses on reading, writing, and math. The secondary level mainly focuses on areas like science and social studies. Their learning will act as a stepping stone in their profession which is why secondary level remedial programs are just as crucial as primary level remedial programs.

In conclusion, the execution of the remedial program in the Philippines is critical, and it must be done effectively by instructors, as it will have an impact on the learners’ current and future progress. As a future teacher, one must remember that while not all students learn on the same day or in the same way, they all have the ability to learn and progress.
