The education system stopped when the pandemic hit the world. It has been years already and most countries tried to bridge the gap created in our education system. First-class countries respond fairly since before the pandemic they have established different modes of learning aside from face-to-face. In a third-world country like the Philippines, this has been a great dilemma though we coped already and one of the ways to bridge the gap created by this pandemic, to continue the teaching and learning process is to have it in the comfort of student’s home. Distance learning is a method of education that is primarily characterized by the physical separation of students and their instructors. This method of learning does not really measure the student’s understanding and their actual knowledge on the specific subject area due to the given circumstances:
- Parents usually do the work – most of the time students are given scores they do not deserve. When the teacher checks the output the handwritten answers shows that they are not the ones who do the output but their parents. Parents don’t like to use the whole time to explain the lesson to their child. Some of them find it hard to teach their own child, to avoid complications either they let the student copy the answer or they are the ones who accomplished the given tasks needed.
- Students are distracted – when they are at home, they tend to use gadgets, play with their friends, and do other unnecessary activities. Their attention easily drifted away given the circumstances mentioned above. There are a lot of distractions present at home. They can develop Mamaya na Habit or can be procrastinators in the future.
- Lack of social interaction – the opportunity to meet and interact with other students and instructors became limited though they can do it virtually students cannot express themselves completely and in serious cases, they develop anxiety during this period.
Distance learning has many drawbacks but still, it is one of the effective ways on how to bridge gaps drawn by pandemic.
