Is there a drop-out in your class? If there is, what are the major problems he is facing ? Is it family problem, poverty, sickness or other reasons? At the end of the school year, dropped outs are reported for they also reflect the performance of the school in the end. At the same time, it also reflects the performance of teachers for the duration of one whole year. Lucky if there would be no drop-outs reported. Unlucky, if there are drop outs reported because the performance bonuses of the teachers would also be affected.
Teachers are not so much with the performance bonuses as well as school administrators if dropped outs would be taken into consideration. The value of discipline and attendance in classes is of prime importance in order for a learner to succeed in his studies. Truly, there is no such thing as an “overnight success.” Through merit and fitness a learner is promoted from one grade to another. As he grows older, he learns the value of attending classes, sitting the whole day just to listen to the lectures of his teachers, sometimes doing hands-on projects if the situation arise and he also learns the value of sacrifice. Time, effort and money should be combined in order to acquire knowledge which would prove to be helpful and useful in the future.
Saving the lowest, the least and the last is one of the battlecries of ALS in the Department since time immemorial yet as teachers who are doing the actual teaching saving them would mean putting them away from jail in the future because ignorance could drive them to do deviating acts like stealing, drug pushing, bullying in exchange for money among others. If the dropped outs could be saved we also save not only their own future but also the future of other people around them who could be their potential victims if they would not be properly educated. The challenge to take good care of the three L’s-Lowest, least and last is a concerted effort of the teachers concerned, the administrators , the parents and the LGU’s. Dropped outs should be taken cared of because they are already deprived of many things in life. Truly, we are our brothers’ keepers especially the dropped outs. Let us save them through proper education. Let us save a part of our nation’s future.
