Teachers are the manager of their own classroom. They are the one responsible for the peace and orderliness, safety, discipline and most of all the good mental development of their pupils with high morale. Good classroom management depends on how one teacher handles it. When the teachers lack planning of daily activities, when the aims and objectives are not clear and attainable, when the program of studies is unrealistic and meaningless, misbehavior occurs, problem arises and therefore, classroom discipline is very necessary. Whereas, good discipline is closely related to good teaching.
According to Miranda (1995), classroom discipline is needed to; create an environment that is socially and emotionally pleasant, satisfying and stimulating, create an attitude or atmosphere that is conducive to learning, maintain peace and sanity in the classroom, keep the classroom orderly, train the pupils to become responsible and independent, for positive attitudes and relieve classroom tensions.
In order to reduce or eliminate disruptions inside the classroom, some effective approach and corrective measures were made. These include:
- Signal interference- these include eye contact, hand gestures and other teacher behavior that reduces inattentive behavior
- Proximately control- touching or standing near the disruptive pupil
- Tension release- smile often
- Lesson restructuring- change a lesson that is not working or boring
- Teacher praise- is a positive reinforce for students/pupils. Use honest praise to compliment their good work
- Keep them busy throughout the whole period.
- Become a good listener- give them time to voice out their opinions
- Set class rules and regulations.
- Open the classroom early or on time.
- Feelings of belongingness- play with your pupils occasionally, eat with them and share jokes but all within certain limits.
When many teachers will put the above-mentioned strategies into practice old or new in teaching profession, I am one hundred percent, sure, that this will help pupils overcome their negative qualities and build more on their positive attitudes. Just remember that we must apply the positive approaches first followed by the negative one. If this happen, teachers are proud to be called good manager, mother surrogate and productive teacher in his time with a pleasant and conducive classroom to standby everyday.
