Mathematical thinking and reasoning began long before it was taught in any formal school of education. Beginning as infants, the fascination of men in designs, patterns, and shapes has become a part of the growing and developing years of an individual. In fact, they are part of lives.
As we grow we learn to walk and manipulate things with our hands which correspond in touching things with inherent designs, patterns, and shapes. With those playful touches, we are able to develop cognitive skills. Without us knowing it, the skills we have with designs and patterns are able to influence us with the fundamentals of mathematical field of geometry.
From the Greek word geo-metron, meaning “earth” and “measurement” respectively, geometry gained official acceptance as a branch of mathematics dealing with the study of shape, size, positioning of figures and the properties of space.
No wonder that in almost everything around us we are influenced by geometry. These influences enabled us to gain and build up so many useful things within the human social habitat. In conclusion, geometry is with us everywhere and it is a fact that in part in defines our ways in life. For instance, when having our meals it is integral on the dishes and utensils we use to make dining comfortable. The chair we sit on, the table for the appetizing food, the plates, forks and spoons, and even the glasses and pitchers where we draw our drinks, all of them will not be here without geometry.
All the lines, angles, shapes, line segments, and curves are visible and tangible proofs of the benefit we can derive from this branch of mathematics. As we enter our favorite hubs, be it museums, theaters, offices, parks, restaurants, churches, hotels and right inside our very own homes; the aesthetic ways of the two-dimensional or the three-dimensional shapes are comforts which geometry brings to us.
With all these wonders, the study of geometry can bring us useful knowledge and infinite benefits which we can handily apply in our day to day living.
In full appreciation of the K to 12 Curriculum of DepED every learner young and old alike should recognize the importance of Geometry as a branch of Mathematics where everyone is given a fair chance to enhance individual learning and skills through its experiential and situated learning.
By the way, the shoes you are wearing will not be there without such knowledge. Simply, let us walk into it.
