In this modern era, the effect of social media in education is really a huge factor in a student’s performance. With this world been so flooded with the current waves of social media, the way how the education is flowing is changing. The combination of social media and education can actually be a good and an effective thing if it would be done properly. Social media has a lot to offer of positive things in education, but we should not overlook the negative things that it can bring.
Positive Effects of Social Media
-Social media can offer extra knowledge. There are many educational sites that contain vast information which can be added to one’s knowledge.
-Social media can motivate someone to learn. As we are in the modern era, many people are really enticed by the beauty of social media. Many students (and even teachers) prefer learning with the use of social media as it is very accessible nowadays and there are a lot of sources of information.
-Social media can give useful ideas. It can help the teachers with ideas on how to properly discuss a topic or even help them to find a better approach. For students, social media can give tips on how to find their most effective learning strategy.
Negative Effects of Social Media
-Social media can tempt the students to cheat and plagiarize. As social media contain so much information, there are students who are being tempted to cheat. Some would even plagiarize a content. They will simply copy a specific content and claim it as their idea or work.
-Social media can be a distraction. These days, there are students and also teachers who enjoy browsing and surfing in the internet which waste most of their time. Not all the time, we open social media for academic purposes, mostly we open it to entertain us that it becomes a cause of distraction.
-Social media has explicit contents. Some people’s way of thinking is being affected by the contents of social media. There are many explicit contents that can be found in a social media, which some students nowadays tend to copy.
As mentioned, we need to utilize social media properly so that we can make sure that it will positively affect someone’s learning.
