“English Speaking?! Oh no! I don’t want to have my nose bleeding in front of the other students, especially those who are in the higher grade!” These are some of the expressions that are commonly used by the students whenever they encounter the English Speaking Zone:
Nowadays, English Speaking Zone is common among schools. It is written in a signboard and is posted in some selected areas of the school, for example under the mango tree with benches where some students spend their time during their break and along the school corridors where most of them passes by. As an English teacher, it is really nice to see the students following and appreciating the English Speaking Zone. However, there are some students who don’t appreciate this project. They find it hard to express themselves in English, that’s why they prefer not to stay in those areas or choose to be quiet than to speak.
Students must realize that English Speaking Zone was implemented not only to challenge them by speaking straight English, but also to help them enhance their fluency in using the language. The students will be able to speak English fluently when the time comes that their tongues are used to it. Furthermore, it would be beneficial for high school students to possess their skills in preparation for senior high school, college and even to the world of work. As it was anticipated that not all high school students will pursue professional careers, instead some will directly seek for a job. Practicing the language will also help them to be globally competitive.
Can it be possible for every school to strictly implement this program?
