Enriching the students’ vocabulary with “The RHLDU Technique”

Haven’t you heard the word ‘commonsensical’? Are you not familiar with the word ‘incarceration’?  If your answers are both yes then you’re one of those high school students dazed by their ‘dictionary-like-classmates’ every time they utter words that do not seem to exist.  They have the wide set of words that you know nothing about. …

You lack in vocabulary but that does not mean you would not improve.  You could.

The word ‘vocabulary’ in the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary is defined as all the words that a person knows or uses.  Words are information, aren’t they?  You could learn new words.  How? You may do it by expanding your vocabulary. How again? It is through reading a book, a newspaper, or any stuff you desire to read.  Once you find your preferred reading material, go get a pen and highlight all those unfamiliar words, list them down and look for their definitions in the dictionary. Do the same thing over and over and incorporate all those words you have learned in a sentence. Moreover, the preferred reading material would be better if it is updated or in lined with the current issues in your society.  Not only this would help to nourish your vocabulary but also for you to be aware and informed with the talked-about events in your place.

Having a strong vocabulary is something useful.  It could make you sound intellectual.  It could help you generate an amusing research paper, a fascinating essay for your English homework or even a Shakespeare-like romantic letter for you’re the person you admire.

High school students dazed by their ‘dictionary-like-classmates’’ words that do not seem to exist do not have a poor vocabulary.  It is just that they are not yet familiar with the words.  So the read-highlight-list-define-use technique (The RHLDU)could really enrich their vocabulary.  It is a simple yet significant way of nourishing the mind.
