Teachers are very significant in nation building. Through quality teachers, the Philippines can develop well-rounded learners, who are immersed in values, armed with 21st century skills, and competent to impel the country to better future.
DepEd Order No. 42 s. 2017 or the National Adoption and Implementation of the Philippine Standards for Teachers (PPST) clearly stipulates the importance of professional standards in the continuing professional development and advancement of teachers based on the principle of lifelong learners. It is committed to supporting teachers, and taking cognizance of evidence that good teachers are vital to raising student achievement. Hence, teacher’s evaluation is very necessary.
The effects of evaluation to teacher’s development are the following: accurate basis on the needs of the teachers, so they will not doubt the kind of development training the school will give them; teachers themselves will have their basis on what they need to improve, so when they plan to attend seminars / trainings at their own expense, they will not just attend to seek a certificate or additional skills and competence, but the y are actually sharpening their needs; the entire school will be guided on what to target on everything they do, whether a training or school activities like Brigada Eskwela, tree planting, school beautification; the school leader will have a concrete basis for annual implementation plan (AIP) for the teacher’s development; it will create a harmonious relationship between the school head and teachers, and teachers themselves because the teachers will feel the compassion of the school head in encouraging and helping them develop towards more competent service; a better school and community will be the end effect of the evaluation of the teachers. Hence, when teachers are given appropriate development training, the community will definitely prosper.
Remember that supervision and evaluation is linked through identifying, planning, and providing professional development to increase teacher’s effectiveness and student achievement.
