Rondalla is an originally music ensemble influenced to us by the Spaniards. The instruments such as banduria, octavina, and laud were Filipinized and gave a unique intonation and design that suit the taste of Filipinos.
During the time of DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones, having rondalla group is one of their priority, under the Bureau of Learning Division. They organized an organized annual seminar for rondalla teachers. It was rolled down from the various regions and divisions by the teacher-participants. Its thrust was to build Filipino students appreciation of Filipino music through rondalla playing.
The department’s goal in propagating rondalla is deemed successful since the teachers were looking forward to organize their own school rondalla as it was alive during the term of DECS Secretary Raul Roco. It made it possible for schools all over the Philippines to put together and establish their small group.
For schools to offer a special program in the arts for students in grades 4 through 6 and junior high school, it is one of the requirements. Even so, the majority of the students had no experience playing rondalla instruments. Organizing a rondalla ensemble is a significant step toward the department’s objective of promoting appreciation of Filipino music. Without a love for Filipino music, instilling in students a strong feeling of nationalism is not possible. As we often say, without culture, there would be no nation. Knowing and learning rondalla instruments will help us better understand our musical and cultural identity.
