It is said that motivation is the drive to complete a task. Motivation has two types: Intrinsic and Extrinsic. In reality, there is no road map to increase motivation in all children, but teachers can employ basic characteristic and techniques to keep children motivated and engaged in the learning process.
Completing a task for the enjoyment of completing it is what we call intrinsic motivation. This type of learning is completely self-motivated and children learn more this way. By allowing children to make choices and not placing restrictions, we can help build intrinsic motivation. Well of course, we should still maintain clear rules with the child. Kids need to be kids and play with materials in the way they deem fit to learn and encourage natural curiosity.
On the other hand, motivation that is supplied by an outside force is external or extrinsic. This motivation results in completing tasks to please someone else or a punishment. It is not effective as intrinsic but it is necessary in the classroom setting. Teachers may set goals with the pupils to have clear-cut rewards, such as awards or extra time. At home, parents may help their children by providing incentive for hard work and achievements.
A key factor in motivation is persistence. It is the ability to work on a task until completion. If the child is able to work on and successfully complete tasks, he becomes intrinsically motivated. Teachers and parents need to let children finish tasks without interruption. We can build persistence through being organized and positive in all interactions.
In addition, setting goals can be a source of motivation for teachers. Educators and parents need to be aware of the child’s ability and select challengers that are not too hard or too easy for the child to attain.
When learning, a child needs to hear positive reinforcements. Each interaction with the child must be places in a positive light. Positive reinforcements can be as simple as praising them or rewards for completing a task. Even when correcting a child, it needs to be placed in a positive light. Staying positive increase self-esteem and motivation.
