Making presentations is part and parcel of a teacher’s life.  Be it in the normal classroom, or in other areas where the services of a teacher is called, presentation is a way of life.  This is particular true when called to discuss something to other teachers and audience aside from the pupils. And with the advent of technology, it is always advisable to come up with a good presentation.

Here are simple tips in starting a good presentation:

Set the tone or level of expectations.  Get advance information on what the audience will expect from you.  But always be reminded of the need to avoid negative expectations.

Tell the audience about yourself.  Introducing yourself properly will help your audience adjust to their expectations and acclimatized themselves to you. But be careful of those who tend to familiarize and go beyond the limits of knowing each other.

Arouse the attention and interest of the audience.  Once you have started, bear in mind that you have to direct the audience’s attention to your presentation.  Injecting humor will be useful and this will ease the apprehensions you have.

Relate the background of topic to audience interests and needs.  As in classroom instructions, real life reference of the topic will make your audience think of the topic’s importance.  This will leave an imprint on their mind and remember you when faced with similar situation.

Tailor presentation by stating view of central theme or major assumptions and premises.  Do not have vague references as this will confuse your audience.  Have a central theme and draw the fullness of your presentation on that theme.  This will simplify your presentation and make you achieve your goal of having a good start of the presentation and make your audience wait for what you have more for them.

Remember that the gauge of your presentation depends largely on how you start it.
