Indeed, it is a fact that learners today are different from students of yesterdays. They differ in terms of behavior, intellect and interest.
They are so called “millennium babies” who are reactive, out spoken and aggressive, however, they easily lose their interest and attention in a short span of time.
Most of them hare high interest in using gadgets rather than playing outdoor games with those pupils’ characteristics, teacher should be smart enough in managing them.
Below are some tips to win the heart of the K-12 learners.
- Make the students feel love.
- Establish holding power with them.
Learners now are emotional being rather than intellectual being. They tend to have a higher EQ (emotional quotient) yet in reality they are unstable emotionally. They love the thinking that they are independent; they can live alone and can make decision of their own.
Teachers should be aware that they cannot play trick and pretend to be nice with them. Instead educator should be real enough in securing the learners emotionally and win their trust. Making them feel love and wanted bring joy to them.
Although you make them feel love and wanted still you have to handle “control” over them. Let than feel that you are still the authority and they must respect you.
- Equip yourself with knowledge
- Surprise them with your activity
- Learn to budget time.
Mastery of subject matter to be taught to the students is very important.
If you know your lesson well you can stand tall in front of the learners. In that way, you can easily gain their trust and respect.
Have them known the objective of the day, however insertion of surprises make the class enjoy the activity. K-12 modules provide student centered activities but being creative in implementing it, make the students active and participative.
Lastly, set a target task for the day so students will feel “accomplished” that the activity is done successfully, and they will start another activity for the next day.
