Ever find yourself in a dilemma of starting a healthy lifestyle but inept of breaking an old habit? We often desire of being fit and fabulous, yet we do not do anything to become one. But more than the curves and slim figure, it is more important to become healthy so that we could prevent diseases that could result from sedentary lifestyle. Statistics shows that Heart Disease and Diabetes Mellitus are on the top 10 leading causes of death in the Philippines and it continues to rise as the year passes by. Both of which can be limited or avoided if engaged in a healthy lifestyle. Sure, a bad habit is hard to break but easy to live with but once you do, a good change could benefit us in a long term.

Nowadays, many people are taking the challenge of switching to a healthier lifestyle that it has becoming a trend now. Even our favourite celebrities are taking the lead which can inspire us along the way. Many food stalls offer a veggie or low carb-diet and fitness clubs continue to pop out everywhere. But a healthy lifestyle should start in our determination to combat the lifestyle-based illnesses most people suffer from. Although it is always hard in the beginning, these ways could help us on our ultimate goal.

Eat a balanced diet. Junk food can be convenient and appetizing but it is not good for our body if taken religiously. Without good nutrition, our body is more prone to disease, infection, fatigue, and poor performance. A proper diet should be low in unnecessary fats and sugars but high in minerals and other nutrients. Cheat days are acceptable but everything should be taken in moderation.

Drink plenty of water. The water required for us to be healthy varies according to a person’s physical-activity level, physiology and climate. It is best recommended to drink at least 2 liters of water a day to replace the fluid loss in our body and to keep us hydrated all throughout.

Avoid too much stress. Stress is the body’s reaction to any kind of demand or threat. It commonly results from too much pressure or overload that a person could not cope well. Although it is natural, stress could be unhealthy that it could affect our physical and mental equilibrium if not handled properly. One thing, it makes us look older so never grow on it.

Move. Exercise. If attending marathon, aerobics, or zumba class can be a hassle, a simple walking every morning or light exercise done regularly could make a difference. It can also promote good circulation of blood in our body. We could also make exercise in fun way so that we’ll never bore out of it. Be creative!

Quit smoking or drinking alcohol. One, it is never good for our health. Two, nobody said it has done anything good. So, when do you plan on quitting, when you are old enough and the damage has been done to your body?

We are never too far on our goals if we set our mind on it. Healthy lifestyle is a choice and we should dare choose it!
