Doing assignments , accomplishing projects to submit, and participating in the school programs and activities or contests ,dealing with terror teachers and classmates with different attitudes are some of the challenges pupils face daily. These factors may contribute to a stressful pupils’ life, which may affect them. Pupils use different coping mechanisms in order to keep up with school work, while balancing a healthy lifestyle. Some study habits developed by them are good, but some are also bad.
Here are some of the bad study habits and how to avoid them:
- Delaying certain tasks is one of the bad habits among pupils. A habit which, may be carried all throughout one’s adult life. Pupil sometimes consciously and unconsciously does it. To avoid this, he must learn how to manage his time and set his priority. Knowing which task is more important or urgent than the others will motivate him to set his priorities and manage his own time. Rescheduling task for a less important activity makes things more complicated like viewing television for a long time before doing your home work. One may end up reporting to school for the next day without any assignment.
- Another bad studying habit is cramming. Cramming is not really bad when a pupil has a rare photographic memory that lets him absorb large volume of information at a short period of time. For a pupil, devoting a certain amount of time to read lessons takes a lot of self-discipline but will eventually pay off when results matter the most. For a pupils who is not blessed the same way, cramming is really a big deal. It makes him feel more nervous and pressured. And when stress was not being able to manage properly, more serious problem may occur. He must listen to his teachers during discussions and take down some important notes for him to read at home. He must review his lessons religiously.
- Allowing unnecessary distructions, which includes internal and external factors. Examples are playing out with friends before a quiz or examination, or playing computer games instead of studying. Pupils still need time for leisure, but these can be done over the weekend or during long breaks.
Parents should always guide their children and teach them “ Time Management “ and “ Proper Setting of Priorities “.Parents should be a living example. Parents must always check their child’s schedule in school. Presence of loving, caring, understanding and supportive parents is a key to child’s success.
